When purchasing a new vehicle, most consumers evaluate the aesthetic and practical features cars and trucks offer. Many of these purchasers also consider a vehicle’s safety and reliability to be important factors. Despite modern safety advances, not all vehicles on the road are equally capable of protecting you in the worst car crashes.
There are several ways to rank the most unsafe vehicles on the road. One method is to examine data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see which makes and models are involved in the most fatal wrecks.
The following 20 cars and SUVs are at least twice as likely as the average vehicle to be involved in a crash resulting in one or more deaths in 2024:

This Mirage model is a four-door sedan instead of a hatchback. Its 10.1 fatality rate is 3.6 times higher than average.
The Encore GX is a small SUV with a fatal crash rate of 9.8, which is 3.4 times greater than average.
This sedan’s fatal accident rate is 2.9 times higher than the average car.
The Envision is another small SUV whose 8.0 fatal accident rate is 2.8 times greater than average.
The Soul’s 7.3 fatal collision rate is 2.6 times more than the average vehicle.
Although Corollas are generally viewed as dependable, the hybrid version is 2.6 times more likely to be involved in a fatal wreck.
Another Chevy sports car, this vehicle is 2.6 times more likely than average to be involved in a crash with a fatality.
This small car’s fatal crash rate is 2.5 times higher than average.
The K5 is a sedan with a fatal accident rating that is 2.5 times greater than the average car.
The Seltos is a subcompact SUV with a 6.8 fatal collision rating, which is 2.4 times more than the average.
The iconic Ford Bronco is 2.3 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than the average vehicle.
The Sport version of the Bronco, this vehicle’s fatal wreck rate of 6.2 is 2.2 times greater than the average vehicle.
The Charger’s 6.1 fatal accident rate is 2.1 times higher than average.
A popular electric vehicle, its rate of fatal accidents is 2.1 times more than the average car.
Just because a vehicle makes this list does not mean you are guaranteed to experience a fatal crash.
